Sara Hickman, Texas State Musician of the Year, performed at the Villagio Town Center’s VIP in Katy at the ARTreach Texas Music Project concert on February 18, 2011. It was a standing room only turn-out for music and art lovers alike.
While Sara performed, Erin Fry, Visual Arts Director of Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center (KVPAC), painted LIVE to the music of this incredible entertainer. “I have been doing live painting for close to five years in concerts and worship services,” says Fry. “But, not only was this the first time that I have painted for Sara, it was the first time the singer added their own special touch to it after the concert, which I loved! Collaboration is an awesome thing.”
Erin Fry created a series of diptychs (two canvases that make up one piece of art) that will accompany the four Texas Music Project concerts this year. “I have donated them to ARTreach,” she explains. “The first two diptychs in the series are available to view at the V Gallery at the Villagio.”
The inspiration for each piece, Mrs. Fry insists, is 100% the music. “I go into each concert with as much of a blank slate as I can.” Sara Hickman‘s amazing collection of songs have been recorded by Texas music legends including Willie Nelson, Shawn Colvin, Brave Combo, and dozens more. “I spent most of the concert laughing so hard it was difficult to paint,” Erin admits. “She is hilarious as well as wonderfully talented!”
As Texas State Musician of the Year, Sara Hickman is dedicated to raising awareness and funding for arts education programs in Texas schools.
Texas Music Project in Katy is at the Villagio Town Center in Cinco Ranch- NE corner of Westheimer Parkway and Peek Road. Next scheduled concert is with Del Castillo, performing LIVE on March 11th – tickets are $15 at the door.
