Ventura County Star: “Sara swamped”

Overachieving Texas singer Sara Hickman heads to Ojai for a house concert

By Bill Locey, August 26, 2010

Sara Hickman, the multi-tasking musical mom out of Texas, will make a rare local appearance in Ojai on Thursday evening at a spacious rich person’s home to be named later. Ojai singer-songwriter Rain Perry is to blame for bringing Hickman way out West; she’s the one you’ll contact to find out where the concert will be.

Hickman is not only a singer-songwriter for adults and children but also a painter, filmmaker and human rights activist. She’s released three albums in 2010, so clearly she’s busier than most of us.

In the early 1990s, she won tons of music awards from the Dallas Observer, which led to a deal with Windham Hill, then Elektra (which later soured when the label ditched her album, but fans helped her raise $50,000 to buy it back). Sara toured (including gigs as the opening act for Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt and others), and appeared on VH1 and “The Tonight Show.”

Hickman has been rewarded for her efforts by being named the state musician of Texas, an honor last held by Willie Nelson. Hickman also has a funny song and video about Sarah Palin, called “Palin’ by Comparison,” and a smile as big as all the lies Texans tell once they drink half as much as they swore they did.
