One Flower To The Left

Released January 1, 2000 | Sleeveless

“total intimacy on the hot plate of love…am i brave? am i crazy? does it even matter?”

ONE FLOWER TO THE LEFT was a limited 500 run CD … with just a hint of reverb and no other studio tricks, i sat down with my friend, kristin, and put down a few of my songs, plain and simple…

here we are, warts and all, but having a great time, delivering some of my tunes straight to your doorstep. also, after the solo songs, there are five rare tracks from 1990-1995 of live performances…

here’s a list of what is on this cd…

thanks, and hope you enjoy!
love,
sara

  • Last Man in the Water
Once upon a time, I had a day
Seemed everything was going my way
I was the type who did believe
    It couldn’t happen to me
Looking back on how it all got started
    I never knew I’d be so open-hearted
Here’s the part of the story where I have to say
My life will never be the same
    Oh oh, oh oh

    Here underneath the water
    I can see
    Here underneath the water
    I’m finally free

I was the last man in the water
I was the one who saved your
    Sons and daughters
And when they finally sent down
    The last shred of rope
I saw my last hope wave goodbye

I barely even had time think
I just sat down and I just got my drink
    I heard an awful sound
    And the world caught fire
    Freezing water swirling all around
I saw it pull a young couple down
My body cold, my fingers numb
    Revelations for everyone

    Here underneath the water
    I can see
    Here underneath the water
    Life’s bigger than me

I was the last man in the water
I was the one who saved your
    Sons and daughters
And when they finally sent down
    The last shred of rope
I saw my last hope wave goodbye

What would you do in shoes?
When you’ve got everything to lose?
I gave away my sweet, sweet right to life
But I don’t regret this final sacrifice

There was maybe four or five of us
Three began to pray, one began to cuss
Who knew who’d be saved, and who was through?
And time was ticking, man, it sure can fly
When life is passing before your eyes
You realize what you have got to do

So you become the last man in the water
Yeah, youre the one who saves the
    Sons and daughters
And when they finally send down
    The last shred of rope
You’ll see your last hope wave goodbye

    Last man in the water
I was the one who saved your
    Sons and daughters
And when they finally sent down
    The last shred of rope
I saw my last hope wave goodbye

    To a Maddening Ghost
I haven’t slept in seven years
I think I’ve forgotten what it’s like to dream
But I know I used to close my eyes
And drift off into deep blue skies
At least that’s what I do remember

    Perhaps no more than most
There is a voice inside my head
    Crawling into bed with me
And as she whiles away the time
    That, once, was rightfully mine
    I’ve begun to play host
    To a maddening ghost

Each night I lay me down to sleep
The Lord my soul I pray to keep
But as He watches over everyone
My night has only just begun
    Staring, at the ceiling
As I wander this forsaken land
    Wishing I could understand
How to shut my mind and just let go
But as soon as she arrives
    I’m forced to raise a toast…
    To this maddening ghost

Please let me rest in peace
    I’m dying to rest…in…peace

The earth has no choice but to woo the sun
And, so, my problem seems like such a small one
For when each day is said and done
The earth and I have one thing in common:
    We’re both running in circles
Tonight I’m thankful for all we are
No distant dreams or wishes on a dying star
And as soon as she arrives
I will not let her close…
    Ah…
    This maddening ghost…

    Stumble and Fall
I can’t always do what’s right for you
Can’t always do what you want me to
I can’t always be the only one
    Who comes around

Try as I might, I let you down
And when you need me most at hand
Well, I’ll be out of town
I won’t always know what to say
I may not make a sound at all

I showed you love, I showed you where to begin
I shared a thousand tears, so you could swim
And now you say the waters’ burning your skin
I never pushed you to jump in

I try so hard not to pick up the stones
Let ’em loose, let ’em fly, through the heart of your home
    But sometimes words fail me
    As if I am dumb
    I stumble and fall
    I stumble and fall

Now we lay awake at night wondering what went wrong
Why don’t we fit together, why don’t we belong together?
I promise you this, with each and every kiss:
    You had my heart

I try so hard not to pick up the stones
And let ’em loose, let ’em fly, through the heart of your home
    But sometimes words fail me
    As if I am dumb
    I stumble and fall
    I stumble and fall

Who started what we can’t stop?
Who made you god and put you on top?
I only want to hear you talk to me
Have I gone mad? What can be said doesn’t even matter

I try so hard not to pick up the stones
Let ’em loose, let ’em fly, through the heart of your home
    But sometimes words fail me
    As if I am dumb
    I stumble and fall
    I stumble and fall

    Necessary Angels
    Beating wings
    Feathered beings
    Up in the sky
Breathe them in with every single sigh
    Frequent fliers
Keep up to date through the radio wires
All day I struggle to stay out of trouble
Seems trouble always doubles for me

    We started out
    Without a doubt
But then we lost the road map and the plan
Fires burning up this hollow empire
    Anger fueled by political liars
    The angels are circling
With a prayer and a pair of pliers
    Act rash
    And in a flash
These birds are better than a handful of cash

    Oh, necessary angels
    Working overtime
    Oh, necessary angels
    Save us everytime
    Save us everytime
    Save us every…

You get yourself in a funky situation
Just your luck, no one to offer transportation
Your mind is cluttered with much too much frustration
Nothing beats a pair of wings

Why don’t we vote an angel in the Oval Office?
Why don’t we hire a flapjack on the news?
    An angel understands Earthly dilemmas
Because they’ve paid the ultimate dues
And there is no other fire than what we create ourselves
Get me heaven, I want a taste of heaven
    I wanna wear winged shoes

    Oh, necessary angels
    Working overtime
    Oh, necessary angels
    Save us everytime
    Oh, necessary angels
    Working overtime
    Oh, necessary angels
    Save us everytime
    Save us everytime
    Save us every…

The Place Where the Garage Used to Stand
I thought I’d grow up to build
    Underwater cities
We thought you’d be a runway model
    ‘Cause your face was oh-so-pretty
    Girl Scouts, soccer, softball, boys
    Sneaking out you better not
    Make a noise
Jane scraped your arms with her
    Red fingernails
Frisbees flew like summer sails, and

    Here is the place
Where we made our future plans
In the days of my childhood
    Here is the place where
    The garage used to stand
And it stood and it stood and it stood
And it stood in my old neighborhood

John killed a lime-green tree frog
With a single blasted Black Cat
    First heard of some secret
    Family jewels as
You kicked Tim for calling Barbara fat
    Summer dresses, swimsuits, shorts,
Tried to gain access to all their forts
One of the boys lit a loaded match
The garage went down in seconds flat, and

    Here is the place
Where we made our future plans
In the days of my childhood
    Here is the place where
    The garage used to stand
And it stood and it stood and it stood
And it stood in my old neighborhood

    Mom is whistling,
    “Time to come in!”
    Summer’s fading
    School year begins
“Eat your dinner. Did you wash your hands?”
    School is ending
    And it’s summer again
    Life was easy to…
    Life was easy to…
    Life was easy… to understand

    Here is the place
Where we made our future plans
In the days of my childhood
    Here is the place where
    The garage used to stand
And it stood and it stood and it stood
And it stood in my old neighborhood

    Life
    Life…life..life..life is just a question
He…he…he…he… he runs to me and
    I… I…I…I… I turn to him
and he…he…he…he… he says to me:

“Report your instincts to the station
This sixth sense of yours is on fire…
Your desire to insult the situation
Can be controlled if you’d just let it go!”

What the hell is he saying? should I return to the good book?
Am I too defensive? is he…always right?

Because life, life, life, life…is just a question…
    She…she…she…she… she runs to me…and
    I…I…I…I… I turn to her
and she…she…she…she… she says to me…

    “Fill the vases…up with flowers…
    Fill the faces…up with laughter…
Fill your heart up with echoes…Fill your mind up with
    nothing…”
    And

I have to scribble quickly she talks so fast, so full of life
There she goes around the corner into another dimension and…

I scratch my head I waste time thinking about…scratching my head…
    And I wonder:
Do we really hold all power here inside?
I jump for joy…at the thought…I jump off cliffs and into
    Fields of love…

la da da daa da da daaa
la da da daa doda da dooo da daaa
la do da daa da da daaa
la da da do doda da dooo da daaa

    She knocks me over mid-thought
My elbow’s scratched, he is holding her stare…
    She is smiling…he is toothless.
Together they are a potent pair…
I kick the can, we run seperate through the trees
    I remember:
Once I was naked and I blame it on Adam and Eve…

    Life…life..life..life is just a question
He…he…he…he… he runs to me and
    I… I…I…I… I turn to her
    and she…she…she…she she says:

    “Life…life..life..life is just a question”
He…he…he…he… he runs to me and
    I… I…I…I… I turn to him
    and she…she…she…she she says…

    Ohh Oh Oh
    Ohh Oh Oh
    Life…life..life..life
    Life…life..life..life

    Look At It This Way
Look at it this way, this way

Too many people have a problem
Thinking of life as a ball and… ball and chain
    Taking for granted simple pleasures
Tied down the tracks, they’re just waiting on the train

So look at it this way, this way
The flag isn’t flying at half mast
Look at it this way, this way
You could have run out of gas
Look at it this way, this way
You’ll always have the last laugh
Maybe that’s just what it takes
To look at it this way

Once I blamed the world for my problems
‘Cause everyone else got what I was due
All I saw was my own anger
Until one day I changed my ways, and changed these heavy shoes

Now, look at it this way, this way
I could have lost my favorite shirt
Look at it this way, this way
I could have been face down in the dirt
    This way, this way
And everytime that I get hurt
Maybe that’s just what it takes
To look at it this way

You keep prolonging your own aching
From a past you can’t let… you can’t let go
It’s your own future you’re forsaking
    You’ve got to
    Give it up
    Pull yourself up
Pave your own way, you know

So look at it this way, this way
The future is written in your hand
Look at it this way, this way
We’re all pieces of a larger plan
Look at it this way, this way
    And someday you’ll understand
That that’s just what it takes
To look at it this way

    Take Me With You
Clock is ticking somewhere down the hall
Candle playing shadows on the wall
Echoes of my life with you
    I hear my heartbeat calling

Sixty years was not enough for me
To show how much our love has grown to be
Now I see you dying to be
    Free I want to follow

    There’s so many reasons why
    I love you,
    I can’t say goodbye

Take me with you, take me when you go
Take me with you, take me when you go
Take me with you, take me when you go
Take me with you, take me when you go
    When you go

Found a way to laugh when life seemed black
Travelled to the stars and brought them back
Take the lead, you’ll leave a crack
    A crack in this foundation

    Every precious memory
    Will carry me
    Don’t say goodbye

Take me with you, take me when you go
Take me with you, take me when you go
Take me with you, take me when you go
Take me with you, take me when you go
    When you go

    Juliet & Juliet
Juliet & Juliet met last night
They kissed ’til the morning light
They held each other and watched the sun
    Rise in each other’s eyes

If mama only knew, she would break us in two
And no more would we stand the chance
So they kept it a secret, two angels in the dark
Curled up and purring like cats

And though they can’t deny the yearnings of the heart
    No matter how they try
    And handcuffs won’t stop us
    No, blindfolds won’t blind us
True love only comes once a life

Juliet & Juliet wept and wept
    When they realized
They knew deep inside it was never to be
The first cut is the deepest, my love

And no one can deny the yearnings of the heart
    No matter how they try
    No, handcuffs won’t stop us
    And blindfolds won’t blind us
True love only comes once a life

Juliet & Juliet met last night
They kissed ’til the morning’s light
They held each other and watched the sun
    Rise in each other’s eyes

    In The Fields
    In the fields
    Where we laid our heads
Dog barking to the heat of the beating sun
    Hot ground
    Sweet ground
A feeling of fever in the air
Kissing the nape of your neck
    (Sighing colors)
    Breaking sticks into heartsick
    Flaming words

    In the fields
    Making love
    The luck of the Irish
    Tucked between your toes
    Love’s debt
    Pays regret
In months I begin to show
Dressing as a car drives by
    (Gasping buzzards)
Turning time into a lover’ s rhyme
    Pressed between the pages
    Of my heart . . .

In the fields where are you?
Are you hiding yourself there . . . still?
In the fields where are you?
    Are you hiding yourself
    In a city of weeds
    Are you hiding yourself
    In a city of glass?
(In a city of glass …)

    In the fields
    Tripping on
    Pushing through the barbs
To reach the greener side . . .
    It was years ago
    We let each other go
To follow the tracks of our dreams . . .
    Sometimes I carry the memory
    (Full term)
    Delivering the spitting
    Image of you
    (Eyes burn)
    I live at peace
I did what I had to do.
    And you . . .
    And you . . .
    And you?

In the fields where are you?
Are you hiding yourself there . . . still?
In the fields where are you?
    Are you hiding yourself
    In a city of weeds
    Are you hiding yourself
    In a city of glass?
(In a city of glass …)

    I Couldn’t Help Myself
growing up together….the years just seemed to fly
changing our lives like the weather…rainy days to
    clear, blue skies
too much time together… riding home from school
teasing me you were better… but you were the one who
    broke the rules

The video for this song is available on Sara’s DVD, “I Am Going On a Journey.” She performed this song on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” – also on the DVD.

    i keep asking myself
how can i be feeling this way
    i keep thinking i’m crazy
but now i just got to say

    i couldn’t help myself…
    no, no… i couldn’t help myself…
    ooh, ooh, i couldn’t help myself…
    from falling…
    in love with you

You have been there whenever I felt like I’d reached the end
Telling you all my secrets, we were the best of friends
Calling me up whenever nothing was going down
Nothing was ever better than when you were around

I keep telling myself you’re just a friend of mine
but the more I deny it, the more I realize

    i couldn’t help myself…
    no, no… i couldn’t help myself…
    ooh, ooh, i couldn’t help myself…
    from falling…
    in love with you

    something inside… came alive
oh, what was the sign? was it there all the time?
    and i don’t know what i’ll do…
if you don’t feel this way, too…

    i couldn’t help myself…
    no, no… i couldn’t help myself…
    ooh, ooh, i couldn’t help myself…
    from falling…
    in love with you

i’m in love, i’m in love, i’m in love, i’m in love, i’m in love, i’m in love… ooh, ooh… you know i’m in love

    Best of Times
    This the best of times
Some say the worst of times
I guess it all just depends
    Which glass you’re drinking from
    This is our only chance
    To reverse a dance
That was started so long ago

This is the best of times
    Look beyond the signs
    Don’t let yourself be scared
Don’t let them make you numb
    This is the final day
    Each and every day
We can return to the love
    That we keep running from

    I see only beautiful faces
    Hands eager to hold

So when I see you down
I want to pick you up
I want to make you laugh
And remind you of the best of times
    Living right before your eyes
So, when I see you down
I want to pick you up
    I want give you hope
And remind you of the best of times
Oh, we’re living in the best of times

These are the best of times
    Yours and mine
    We can never forget
    How blessed we are
And though the sun may set
When we least expect it to
    Remember all the times
Life was so sweet with you
And in the end it will seem
Life rolled by like a dream

So when I see you down
I want to pick you up
I want to make you laugh
And remind you of the best of times
    Living right before your eyes
So, when I see you down
I want to pick you up
    I want give you hope
And remind you of the best of times
Oh, we’re living in the best of times

    These are the daily trials
Yet every once in a while
    Clouds all disappear
    Making everything else clear
    When our emotions grow cold
    Tide of winter takes hold
Don’t give in to sorrow so soon
When the spring could arrive by this afternoon!

So when I see you down
I want to pick you up
I want to make you laugh
And remind you of the best of times
    Living right before your eyes
So, when I see you down
I want to pick you up
    I want give you hope
And remind you of the best of times
Oh, we’re living in the best of times

    Eye of the Storm
    Tonight I read the questions
    The tears on your face
You wonder how long I will love you
    If your heart is safe

    Well I don’t remember
    What I should say
    ‘Cus it’s been too long
    Since I felt this way

    Someone broke the locket
    By forcing the key
Someone said they were a poet
    With no words to say

    And I don’t remember
    What you should say
    ‘Cus it’s been too long
    Since you felt this way

    And all I remember
Is the eye of the storm
You got caught up in the hurricane
Oh, and I stayed safe and warm

    You should separate
    The rose from the thorn
I’ve learned to watch for the wolves
    Dressed in sheep’s clothes
    We’re in for nasty weather
    You’re not reading the signs
    I see lightning and thunder
I hope you’ll protect yourself this time

    And I don’t remember
    What I should say
    ‘Cus it’s been too long
    Since you felt this way

    And all I remember
Is the eye of the storm
You got caught up in a hurricane
Oh, and I stayed safe and
    All I remember
Is the eye of the storm
Losing yourself to the wind and rain
While I stayed safe from harm
    And all I remember
Is the eye of the storm
You got caught up in a hurricane
Oh, and I stayed safe from harm

    Simply
    I’ll tell you simply I’m
    Falling for you
I’ve never felt this way before
    I don’t need flowers and
    Idon’t mind tears
    I just need you
    Through the years.

    I am your lover and
    You are my friend
    We’ve got laughter to share
    I’ll always want you
    To want me
I’ll always want you to care.

    We can’t be one
But two is fine with me
    You’ve got mine
    I don’t want you
    Under my hand
I just need you to understand

    I’ll tell you simply I’m
    Falling for you
I’ve never felt this way before
    I don’t need flowers and
    I don’t mind tears
    I just need you
    Through the years.
